Resident tax: rates are set by the Local Tax Act and applied by each municipality; JapanCalc uses the standard rates and the Tokyo 23-ward exemption threshold. Statistics: from the National Tax Agency’s private-sector pay survey (published 29 September 2026) and the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare’s wage survey.
How figures are checked
- Rates and fees are taken from the primary source (the agency that sets them), not from secondary websites.
- The numbers in each page’s text — take-home amounts, limits, examples — are compared automatically with the calculator’s own results before every update.
- Holiday data is generated by rule (fixed dates, “Happy Monday” holidays, substitute and bridge days, equinoxes) and compared with the Cabinet Office’s official list.
- The katakana name converter uses a dictionary of 522 common names with established spellings; other names are converted by pronunciation rules. In our own tests of names outside the dictionary (91 names in two independent sets), about 63% matched the usual spelling, so treat those results as a starting point.
Corrections
- 2026-10-22 — Travel budget calculator: replaced March 2025 exchange rates and corrected the Tokyo Subway Ticket 72h (¥1,500 → ¥2,000), Narita Express (¥3,070 → ¥3,140 after the March 2026 fare revision) and Tokyo Monorail (¥500 → ¥520) to current prices.
- 2026-10-22 — On the take-home pages by salary, the tax-bracket text was wrong (¥6M is in the 10% bracket and ¥10M in 20%, so marginal rates of about 20% and 30%). Also updated: the child-allowance income limit (abolished October 2024), the spouse-deduction threshold (spouse salary ¥1.23M or less), the latest average and graduate pay, and the English pages’ annual take-home figures, which now match the calculator.
- 2026-10-21 — Added 6 May 2026 (substitute holiday), which was missing from the holiday data (affecting the holiday checker and days calculator). Aligned the furusato nozei limits on the salary pages (off by up to about ¥16,000) and the basic-deduction tier on the ¥2M page with the calculator.
- 2026-09-10 — Fixed the salary calculator showing a lower take-home when a bonus was entered. Built in the October 2026 Click Post revision (¥240, 2kg, 60cm total) so it switched over on the day.
- 2026-08 — Applied the 2025 tax reform (¥650,000 minimum employment deduction, tiered basic deduction) to the salary and furusato nozei calculators. Corrected the Smart Letter price from ¥180 to the current ¥210. Improved katakana name conversion accuracy.
