How to Use the Discount Calculator
This tool offers three calculation modes. In "Calculate Discounted Price" mode, enter the original price and discount rate (%) to instantly get the discount amount, discounted price, and tax-inclusive final price. "Calculate Discount Rate" mode works in reverse: enter the original and discounted prices to find the percentage off. "Find Original Price" mode lets you calculate what an item cost before the sale. Use the preset buttons (10%, 20%, 30%, half price, 70%) for quick input.
Japan consumption tax integration is built in. In Japan, consumption tax is applied to the price after the discount, not before. You can choose between the standard 10% rate and the reduced 8% rate (for food, non-alcoholic beverages, and qualifying newspapers).
Understanding Discounts in Japan
Shopping in Japan often means dealing with tax-exclusive pricing (税抜価格). Most price tags show the pre-tax price, and consumption tax is added at the register. When a sale advertises "20% OFF," the discount applies to the tax-exclusive price, and then tax is calculated on the reduced amount. This two-step process can make it tricky to know the final price at a glance. This calculator handles both steps together so you can see exactly what you'll pay. Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate 10% off?
To calculate 10% off, multiply the original price by 0.9. For example, if an item costs ¥1,000 and is 10% off, then ¥1,000 × 0.9 = ¥900 is the discounted price. Alternatively, ¥1,000 × 10% = ¥100 is the discount amount, and ¥1,000 − ¥100 = ¥900. Enter the price and discount rate in this tool for instant calculation.
Is consumption tax included in the discounted price?
In Japan, consumption tax is applied to the discounted price, not the original price. For example, a ¥1,000 item at 20% off becomes ¥800, and then 10% consumption tax (¥80) is added for a total of ¥880. This tool calculates both the discount and consumption tax together.
How do I calculate the discount rate?
The discount rate (%) is calculated as: discount amount ÷ original price × 100. For example, if a ¥1,000 item is reduced to ¥800, the discount amount is ¥200. Then ¥200 ÷ ¥1,000 × 100 = 20%, meaning it's 20% off. Use Mode 2 of this tool to calculate the discount rate automatically.
How do I find the original price before a sale?
To reverse-calculate the original price from a discounted price, use the formula: discounted price ÷ (1 − discount rate). For example, if an item is 20% off and now costs ¥800, the original price is ¥800 ÷ 0.8 = ¥1,000. Use Mode 3 of this tool to find the original price automatically.
How does half price (50% off) work with consumption tax?
Items at half price (50% off) are still subject to consumption tax in Japan. For example, a ¥2,000 item at half price becomes ¥1,000, and then 10% consumption tax is added for a final price of ¥1,100. For food and beverages with the reduced 8% rate, the final price would be ¥1,080. Use this tool to combine any discount rate with the appropriate tax rate.
