How to Calculate Japanese Age (満年齢の計算方法)

The Japanese age calculator uses your date of birth to compute your current 満年齢 (man-nenrei) — the official Japanese age used on all government forms, visa applications, contracts, and official documents in Japan. 満年齢 works exactly like the Western age system: you are 0 at birth and your age increases by 1 on each birthday.

The calculator also shows your 数え年 (kazoedoshi) — the traditional Japanese counting age. In this older system, everyone is born age 1 and gains a year on January 1st, not on their birthday. While kazoedoshi is rarely used in official contexts today, it still appears in traditional ceremonies, Buddhist rituals, and some regional customs.

Understanding Your Japanese Birth Era (生まれた元号)

Japan counts years using both the Western calendar and the imperial era system (元号, gengō). The calculator shows which era you were born in — whether Reiwa (令和, 2019–present), Heisei (平成, 1989–2019), Showa (昭和, 1926–1989), Taisho (大正, 1912–1926), or Meiji (明治, 1868–1912). This is useful when filling out Japanese forms that ask for your birth year in era format.

To convert between era years and Western years, use the Japanese era date converter. To find your Japanese zodiac sign, try the Japanese zodiac calculator.

Age calculation follows Japanese law (年齢のとなえ方に関する法律, 1902). Era data sourced from the Japan Cabinet Office.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is 満年齢 (man-nenrei) in Japan?
満年齢 (man-nenrei) is the official Japanese age system, equivalent to the Western method of counting age. A person's age is 0 at birth and increases by 1 on each birthday. It has been the legal standard in Japan since 1902 and is used for all official documents, contracts, and government purposes.
  • What is 数え年 (kazoedoshi) and how is it calculated?
数え年 (kazoedoshi) is the traditional Japanese age counting system. A person is considered age 1 at birth, and age increases by 1 every January 1st regardless of birthday. To calculate kazoedoshi: subtract the birth year from the current year, then add 1. For example, someone born in 2000 is kazoedoshi age 26 in 2025.
  • How do I calculate my age for Japanese government forms?
Japanese government forms and official documents use 満年齢 (man-nenrei), which is the same as the Western age system. Enter your date of birth in the calculator above to find your current 満年齢. The age shown is valid for any official Japanese document, visa application, or government paperwork.
  • What are the special age milestones in Japan?
Japan has several traditional age milestones: 還暦 (kanreki) at age 60 marks a full zodiac cycle; 古稀 (koki) at 70; 喜寿 (kiju) at 77; 傘寿 (sanju) at 80; 米寿 (beiju) at 88; 白寿 (hakuju) at 99; and 百寿 (hyakuju) at 100. These are celebrated with special ceremonies and are important cultural events in Japanese society.
  • What Japanese era was I born in?
Japan uses imperial era years (元号, gengō) alongside the Western calendar. The current era is Reiwa (令和), which started May 1, 2019. Before that was Heisei (平成, 1989–2019), Showa (昭和, 1926–1989), Taisho (大正, 1912–1926), and Meiji (明治, 1868–1912). Enter your date of birth in the Japanese age calculator above to find your birth era instantly.
